A customer on the Manvers estate in Wath-upon-Dearne, Rotherham, contacted us after the locking mechanism on their rear uPVC door failed and left it open. Although the door could still be opened and closed, it wouldn’t lock, leaving the property insecure.
After being recommended to us by a previous customer, they called SF Locksmiths. We attended straight away to investigate the problem. We quickly identified the fault and carried out the repair during the same visit, getting the customer’s back door locking securely again.
Replacing a failed Avocet multipoint locking mechanism
After examining the faulty door, we identified an Avocet silver multipoint locking mechanism that required replacement.
These mechanisms are commonly fitted to older uPVC doors. After years of use, internal components can wear or fail, sometimes leaving a back door that won’t lock or a locking mechanism stuck in one position. We removed the faulty mechanism and fitted a replacement Avocet silver version, restoring the door’s locking operation.
The accompanying photograph shows the original faulty mechanism alongside its replacement.

Correcting badly misaligned uPVC doors
Replacing the mechanism was only part of the repair. The rear doors were badly misaligned, putting unnecessary pressure on the multipoint locking system. This was almost certainly a contributing factor to the original failure.
When a uPVC door drops or becomes misaligned, the locking points can snag against the frame keeps. This makes the handle difficult to lift and can eventually jam or break the door lock. We carefully realigned the door and adjusted the keeps to ensure everything operated smoothly. The difference was immediately noticeable. The customer said the door now closed and locked better than ever.
With properties on the Manvers estate now approximately 15–20 years old, we regularly encounter similar problems involving worn mechanisms and poor door alignment.
