Emergency door lock repair in Maltby after fire brigade entry

We were called to a property in Maltby, Rotherham, after the fire brigade forced entry following a lady’s fall inside her home. Although a spare key was available in an outside key safe, the lady had left her own key in the inside lock. This prevented the spare key from operating the lock from outside. With urgent access needed, the fire brigade had to force entry, damaging the door lock in the process.

Repairing the damaged door lock

Fortunately, I was working nearby and arrived within approximately 30 minutes. I repaired the damaged lock fittings and installed a new thumb-turn lock to help prevent the same problem from happening again.

Unlike a conventional double-key cylinder, a thumb-turn lock uses a simple turn knob on the inside instead of a key. This means family members or carers can use their spare key from outside, as there is no key on the inside. It also makes unlocking the door from inside easier, particularly in an emergency. Something that is worth investigating if you have elderly family.
